Or get lucky and save a bunch of knighthood sergeants from a heretic coven. You have to get sorta inventive to keep an army up prior to reaching kingdom status. I've actually been doing a pendor run where I am just using Pendor troops, companions, and knighthood troops. Biggest gap is the lack of range option, but they are defensive linemen, they don't need to QB an axe or jav. Sergeants are just more focused on defensive, as are the rhodoks in general. Their crossbowmen and sergeants aren't quite as good as the rhodoks, but they are good enough, and I don't really have to worry about morale problems. More often tho, I just stick with Swadian troops. I personally take Rhodoks, I like the looks better, and there is just something about having a visually cohesive army. I'll actually argue that the rhodok sargents is better than the huscarl. Infantry is mostly there to protect your archers because most the enemy will be dead by the time infantry gets to the fighting area. Best to have a lot of cavalry and archers on the field though because they do so much damage already. I would put cavalry away and replace with more infantry/archers when siegeing though. You have the best cavalry, the best infantry, and the best archer.
